What is a Club Store?
Club stores are membership-based retail warehouses that sell products in bulk quantities at discounted prices. The big three dominating this space are BJ’s Wholesale Club, Sam’s Club and Costco Wholesale. Unlike traditional grocery stores or supermarkets where anyone can walk in and shop, club stores require customers to purchase an annual membership before they can access the sales floor.
This type of store, known as a “warehouse,” has a different vibe than a grocery store. The aisles are wider. The ceilings are higher. Products sit on industrial pallets rather than neatly organized shelves. And the shopping carts? They’re practically small vehicles. The no-frills environment is intentional, keeping operational costs low so those savings can pass directly to members.
But the differences go far beyond aesthetics. The entire business model operates on a fundamentally different set of rules.
According to Entrepreneur, the markup at a typical retail store is around 50%. In other words, the price you pay is twice what the store paid. By contrast, warehouse stores charge a much lower markup. For instance, Costco’s markup is only 14% to 15%, according to Forbes. They make up for the lost profits by charging a fixed yearly fee to each customer.
This membership model creates a unique shopping psychology. Customers who pay annual fees feel compelled to maximize their investment, which translates to larger basket sizes and more frequent visits. The average Costco member spends significantly more per trip than a typical grocery shopper.
For brands, this environment presents both tremendous opportunity and distinct challenges. Products need to stand out in cavernous spaces where consumers move quickly and make decisions from greater distances. The packaging requirements, the quantity configurations, and the competitive dynamics all differ from traditional retail.
